When you entered college at the age of 18, did you know what you wanted to do when you grew up? No. And at 23 years old I still can’t figure out one specific thing that energizes me and makes me giddy.
Every other month, I change my dream job.
I grew up in a generation where there were so many options as opposed to sticking to one thing and excelling in it. I’m going to refer to this as “Topic ADD” It is difficult for me to settle on one passion since I have a hodgepodge of interests. Over the past four years I envisioned myself in a myriad of different professions including a graphic artist designing page layouts for a magazine, a sales development executive delivering motivating speeches, a blogger making money talking about new media or makeup, and a copywriter at an ad firm. They’re all fairly creative, but so limited. Why can’t I dabble in them all?
What drew me to the Interactive Communication Masters Program (ICM) at Quinnipiac was its diversified curriculum. I could try a little bit of everything that interests me:
Social Networking- I check Facebook 5 times a day. I have convinced myself that I am “tracking” instead of stalking. I’m trying to figure out Twitter, as of now, I don’t get the hype. I’ve tried blogging in the past, but I could never narrow it down to a single topic (again Topic ADD). I’d love to know more about everthing else. I just need a little structure and guidance for where to begin because the internet can be a little overwhelming.
Design- I can’t draw and I can’t paint, but I love making computer generated art! Basically, it allows you to “cheat”. Want to draw a picture of yourself? You can trace it in Illustrator. Want to go to Thailand, but don’t have the money to do so? Fake it by Photoshopping yourself there.
New Gadgets/Technology- I love looking up some of the crazy gadgets people think we need to make our life easier. For example, a microwave that hooks up to your laptop… USB Microwave Oven – Smallest in the World | GeekAlerts.
So, I’m participating in the ICM program because I can learn a little more about a lot of stuff. I have Topic ADD and if I can figure out a way to combine everything that I love, then I can have my dream job! One day, I’m going to be a new media marketing consultant designing websites that utilize appropriate advertising and interactive communication techniques.
Wow, it is clear you have a gift for writing in a way that is engaging. You are so right, why do we have to limit ourselves so much? I definitely agree that we are part of a generation where there is so much it is hard to stay focused. I really look forward to reading your blog and seeing where this takes you. I don’t think we have to figure it out any age. Who knows in twenty years you may decide to try a whole new career. What is awesome is that with this degree we can do it. I really like the way you end your entry by finding a way to incorporate all the jobs you want in one.
